D. capitatum

 

Common Name: Blue Dicks

The vigorous corms of this species increase rapidly by offsets and were a principal source of food for the original Californians. It has purple bracts around tight knots of blue– violet flowers on 2–3 foot stems. It loves heat, sun and good drainage, and blooms early in spring. Our bulbs are grown from seeds from many low Sierra foothill locations, 1000 to 2800'.

D. congestum

 

Common Name: Forktooth Ookow

Tight raceme of lavender blue flowers on stems to 2 feet high. Grows in sun or filtered shade. Found in both North Coast and Sierra Ranges. Makes excellent cut flowers. Grown from seed collected in Sierra county at 3500' elevation. Form very like D. multiflorum, except that crown segments are toothed.

D. ida-maia

 

Common Name: Firecracker Flower

Large, bright crimson tubular flowers in an umbel supported by a 20 to 30 inch stem. Blooms in May to June. Found in open woodlands and grasslands of the California Coast Range. From seed collected from several sites in northern Coast Range, 600 to 1800'.

D. multiflorum

 

Common Name: Roundtooth Ookow, Wild Hyacinth

Clusters of lavender urn–shaped flowers on 24" stems. Found from the central Sierras and the edge of the Valley north to Oregon. Thrives in sun and heat. Make excellent cut flowers. Grown from seed collected in Yuba county at 1800'. Form very like D. congestum, except that crown segments are rounded.

D. volubile

 

Common Names: Twining Brodiaea, Snake Lily

Large, dense clusters of bright pink flowers on long twining stems, often climbing bushes and fences. Blooms in May to June. Found in open woodlands of lower foothills of Sierra Nevada and California Coast Range. From seed collected from several sites in northern Sierra Nevada foothills, 1000 to 2400'.
